Bluewater Lily

The Blue Water Lily, also known as “Nil Manel” in Sinhala, is the national flower of Sri Lanka. It is a species of water lily, scientifically named Nymphaea nouchali. The flower is prized for its beauty, cultural significance, and traditional medicinal uses. The terms “blue water lily” and “blue lotus” often refer to the same plant, which is native to southern and eastern Asia.

This plant thrives in shallow, calm water bodies and is most commonly found in the dry zone regions of the country. Adapted to warm climates, it flourishes in still or slow-moving aquatic environments. One of its distinctive features is its prolonged blooming period, with flowers typically remaining open and vibrant throughout most of the day, adding continuous color and life to its surroundings
